The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has selected its second portfolio of 27 research, innovation, and trial projects aimed at promoting research in the field of 6G technology in Europe.

Erzsébet Fitori, the Executive Director of Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) presented the 27 newly chosen research projects set to commence operations from January 1, 2024 during her keynote address at the 5G Techritory 2023 event.

In its second phase, SNS JU is shifting focus toward more detailed design and system optimization, incorporating microelectronics and sustainability as fundamental aspects. The primary objective is to establish cutting-edge 6G technology capabilities across Europe and actively contribute to standardization endeavors. Backed by an EU budget of €130 million, this second call will further bolster and expedite groundbreaking research in 6G technologies throughout Europe and worldwide. Collaborating on an international scale is integral to achieving a globally recognized 6G standard, with one of the selected projects emphasizing EU-US research cooperation.

An overview of the announced projects related to the 6G network is available online.

With these latest additions, the SNS JU portfolio now encompasses a total of 62 research, innovation, and trial projects. The 27 new projects, unveiled on October 19, mark the beginning of the second phase of the SNS Roadmap. This roadmap will continue to expand with forthcoming 3rd and 4th SNS JU Calls, along with the resulting projects, scheduled to kickstart their activities in 2025 and 2026, respectively. The launch of these fresh projects aligns with the formal approval of the SNS JU Governing Board.
