Four models, four approaches
As in previous years, Apple plans to launch four models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The standard version targets the widest range of users, while the Air offers an elegant, ultra-thin design. The Pro models are aimed at those seeking maximum performance and the most advanced features.
Interestingly, the iPhone 17 Air does not only bring a thinner body but also a different approach to the camera. Instead of a dual- or triple-lens system, it comes with a single 48 MP lens, giving it a minimalist appearance. The Pro models, on the other hand, will feature new telephoto cameras, a more powerful A19 Pro chip, and up to 12 GB of RAM, catering to the most demanding users and professionals.
Thinner design, stronger performance
The most significant change comes in the design. At 5.5 mm, the iPhone 17 Air is Apple’s thinnest smartphone to date. Made from a combination of aluminum and titanium, the device is expected to offer a balance between lightness and durability. However, a thinner body also brings its challenges. The battery is slightly smaller, so the Pro models are expected to offer significantly greater endurance, including a record 5,000 mAh in the Pro Max. Regarding the display, all models feature ProMotion LTPO panels with a 120 Hz refresh rate. This ensures smoother animations and better energy efficiency. The front camera is also upgraded. All models will get a new 24 MP selfie camera, while the Pro Max will include a 48 MP telephoto sensor with up to 5x optical zoom.
Software, connectivity, and pricing
All iPhone 17 models will ship with iOS 26 and integrated Apple Intelligence AI features. Improved connectivity is also expected, including Wi-Fi 7 support and faster 25 W wireless charging via the Qi 2.2 standard, while wired charging will reach up to 35 W. The Pro models may also receive enhanced cooling, which will further assist with demanding tasks and gaming.
Apple’s event is scheduled for September 9, 2025, with sales starting on September 19. Prices are expected to start around $849 for the base model, while the Pro Max will exceed $1,200.
It seems that Apple aims to offer the best of both worlds this time: a device that is thin and elegant for everyday use, along with powerful versions for users who want more. We’ll find out in September if the thinnest iPhone yet will also be the most desirable.
